Farfel Speaks!

bullet Ocala was Farfel's best friend for the first two years of his life. She lived in Scott's old building with another Scott and his wife Sarah and was raised for a life of service. After a flirtation with becoming a guiding-eye dog, Ocala decided she'd be happier working for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and enlisted. That's Farfel's Scott in the picture with Sarah, by the way, not Ocala's Scott.

Scott's godson Liangliang is one of Farfel's favorite people in the world, probably in part because Liang likes to sneak Farfel treats behind Scott's back. Farfel has known Liang since he was a kid. Originally from Tianjin, China, Liang is now 18 and in college. But several years ago, when he was first learning English, he made Farfel the subject of one of his compositions. bullet Pictured at right is Pengyou, Farfel's esrtwhile companion. Plucked from a street stall in Beijing, Pengyou, whose name is Chinese for "friend," emigrated to the U.S. in Scott's suitcase. Farfel enjoyed his company for six months, until the fateful day when, without warning, he unceremoniously bit the hapless Pengyou's head off. R.I.P., Pengyou, old friend.

Since Scott and Farfel moved uptown, they've been visiting the local dog park on weekend mornings. That's where the neighborhood pooch owners  congregate, and where the dogs themselves frolic off the leash. Above are some of Farfel's new compatriots: Rudy, Sasha, Bart, Jerry, Emmy, Bailey, Kobie, Max and Casey.  At right, Casey, who is Farfel's down-the-hall neighbor and his best pal in the bunch, is very much the center of attention. Laurel, Jerry's mom, took all the photos.

Spencer, who lives in Farfel's building, doesn't generally get up in time for the dog park, so Farfel has to catch him on the fly later in the day. Spencer prefers a lazy day on the couch.

When Scott goes away, Farfel gets to visit with his friend Teresa, who lives in Virginia. Teresa, who has several jobs (one of which is as a school crossing guard) speaks "dog" fluently and takes excellent care of him, and Farfel returns the favor by following her everywhere - even into the bathroom. Scott suspects that she spoils Farfel, because he's never all that excited to come home after a few days with Teresa.
