For
most of his life, Farfel ate regular dog food, and for most of his life
he also suffered from occasional stomach problems. Last year his vet
concluded that he might just be allergic to his diet and suggested Royal
Canin IVD Veterinary Diet Dog Potato and Duck Formula, which contains
ingredients not associated with allergies in dogs and which, for some
unknown reason, also requires a prescription to buy. Why potato and duck
have suddenly become controlled substances is a legitimate question, but
the upshot is that Farfel has had less of a problem with his stomach, and
Scott has had more of a problem with his discretionary income, since
this new regimen began. |
 |
Every so often, however, he
decides he has had enough and refuses to eat, setting Scott into a minor
tailspin. Since a regular Farfel makes for a happy Scott, the order of
the day is usually to add something to Farfel's kibble to make it more
palatable. Examples include: |
|
|
Chicken
Soup. Which also helps keep the doctor away! |
|
Peanut
Butter. A little dab'll do ya. See more about Farfel and this favorite

Chopped meat.
A sure winner.
Farfel
particularly appreciates USDA Choice flank steak, but really isn't all
that choosy. |
|
VitaGravy.
Made especially for finicky dogs, this stuff is billed as the
perfect "flavor enhancer" for dry dog food. It's ruinously expensive and
comes in three "delicious" flavors. Farfel is deeply suspicious of all of
them.
|
 |
Since
we're telling all, it might as well all be out in the open: Farfel
occasionally takes
Metamucil for
irregularity. It was his vet who suggested it,
in fact. He doesn't seem to mind the "original flavor, regular texture"
variety when it's mixed in with enough of his kibble, especially when
it's followed by a peanut butter chaser. |
